Wisconsin cancels Thursday's statewide tornado drill
(WLUK) — There will be no statewide tornado drill in Wisconsin this year.
Wisconsin Emergency Management says it decided to cancel Thursday's drill in light of the severe weather that has impacted the state this week. With emergency management, local agencies and affected people responding to and recovering from the impacts of the storms, state officials say the drill would place additional strain on already stretched resources.
“While tornado preparedness is critically important, our immediate priority is on the safety and recovery of those impacted by these recent storms,” Wisconsin Emergency Management Administrator Greg Engle said in a news release. “We recognize the value of these drills, but at this time, our communities need the flexibility and focus on real-world responses.”
The National Weather Service is helping Minnesotans prepare for severe weather. Here's how.
It's Severe Weather Awareness Week in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Before the next round of rough weather hits, officials with both states want to make sure you have your emergency plans in place.
"I personally think it's extremely important to give us a reminder that we are transitioning seasons. We all have a role to play when it comes to being prepared, responding to and recovering from any type of emergency or disaster," said Allison Farole, director of Minnesota's Homeland Security and Emergency Management.
The state agency has partnered with the National Weather Service on the campaign to bring severe weather preparations to the forefront of people's minds.
