Contract dispute cuts off Florida Panthers game, Scripps TV stations from Comcast

Florida Panthers fans who tried to watch Tuesday night’s game against the Ottawa Senators in South Florida on Comcast were met with disappointment.

Due to a contract dispute, Comcast has dropped coverage of Scripps TV stations, which includes the Panthers’ broadcast channels.

“As a result, tonight’s Panthers game will not be broadcast on Comcast in Miami Dade, Broward and West Palm Beach,” the Panthers said in a statement posted on social media on Tuesday shortly after the start of the game. “In those counties, Panthers games can be found over the air, on other cable and satellite providers and on the Panthers Plus app.

Xfinity yanks NewsChannel 5 from its lineup during a contract dispute

Comcast Xfinity yanked NewsChannel 5 and 39 other local TV stations nationwide from its lineup March 31 in the midst of a contract dispute with Channel 5's parent company, Scripps Media.

Comcast customers who clicked on NewsChannel 5 saw a blue screen with the message, "This channel is unavailable."

"Our contract with Scripps, the owner of this channel, has expired," the message reads. "Scripps has refused our reasonable offers, and their demands would significantly increase the price you pay."

In a message on the Scripps website, the company insists that it has been negotiating in good faith.

"We hope Comcast recognizes the critical value we play for our communities and restores our stations’ signals so we can continue to serve their customers," the post says.

For months, WTVR’s parent company, Scripps, has worked diligently to reach an agreement with Comcast that is fair for both sides and viewers.

TV station owners and cable and satellite companies are required by Congress to negotiate distribution contracts. When customers pay Comcast a monthly fee for programming, Comcast pays each channel on its system a fee to include that channel in its service. That is the negotiation that is currently happening. Scripps uses these dollars to invest in local sports, news and weather coverage at each station.
