State police responding to active shooter at New Castle-area DMV

A Delaware State Police trooper has been killed in the active shooter incident at the Wilmington Division of Motor Vehicles near New Castle that prompted the abrupt closure of the center mid-afternoon on Tuesday, Dec. 23, per state authorities.

Delaware State Police announced that the trooper had been killed via a post on X, but said they are "continuing to assess additional injuries." The public is still being asked to avoid the area.

At 2:42 p.m. Tuesday, Delaware State Police posted on X that there was no longer an active shooter and "one suspect is in custody." Meanwhile, Delaware's governor has said on X that the shooter is dead.
