Milwaukee Brewers 2026 preview by position: Outfield
We continue our series previewing each position on the Brewers by looking at the outfield, and we’ll also discuss the designated hitter spot, as Christian Yelich’s transition into full-time designated hitting continues. As for the actual outfield, two of these three spots are firmly spoken for. But the third outfield spot is, if not necessarily in flux, a position where there’s likely to be a decent amount of rotation throughout the season. Let’s take a look.
There is something worth remembering about Jackson Chourio: he only just turned 22 last Wednesday. Anyone hinting at the idea that Chourio’s first two seasons in the big leagues were disappointing would be, in a word, wrong. While some were perhaps hoping for a bigger leap in his second season, Chourio has still put together two productive seasons, back-to-back 20/20 seasons in which he’s averaged about three WAR per season. That makes him one of the most productive Brewers, and to bring it back to where we started, I want to re-stress that he has not yet played a regular-season game over the age of 21.
Brewers Facing Jackson Chourio Decision Ahead of MLB Season
With Opening Day beginning this week, the Milwaukee Brewers have yet to commit to a clear center field solution, and some believe the best fix is sliding Jackson Chourio ot center and handing Jake Bauers the left field job on a full-time basis.
Chourio has spent most of his young career in left field, but is no stranger to center, logging 89 appearances in 131 games in 2025. The argument for moving him is simple: it unlocks Jake Bauers, one of Milwaukee's hottest bats, into an everyday role without displacing anyone from the lineup.
Bauers has made the case impossible to ignore this spring. In 14 games, he batted .457/.578/1.114, emerging as arguably the team's Spring Training MVP. His production has been there as he closed the 2025 regular season on a tear and carried that momentum into the postseason.

The Brewers didn’t use much variation at designated hitter in 2025, with only 12 players recording an appearance at DH. However, only two hitters had more than 20 appearances at the position, and both are still on the roster as Milwaukee heads towards Opening Day at American Family Field.
Starter: Christian Yelich
Backup: William Contreras
Depth: Jake Bauers, Gary Sanchez
Prospects: Luke Adams, Brock Wilken
Brewers fWAR Ranking Last Year: 10th out of 30
Brewers fWAR Projection This Year: 9th out of 30
Yelich still led the team in home runs in 2025 with 29, but the main positive was his health. The former MVP appeared in 150 games for the Brewers, which is his most since 2022. Yelich slashed .264/.343/.452 in 2025, and while his OPS was his lowest since 2022, Yelich is still the most dangerous bat in the Brewers lineup, day in and day out, even if he isn’t an MVP-caliber player anymore. The highest-paid player on the Brewers will look to continue his stretch of success with the club in 2026.
