Preliminary magnitude 3.3 earthquake strikes near San Ramon, California, USGS says

SAN RAMON, Calif. (KGO) — An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 3.4 struck near San Ramon at 11:21 p.m. Sunday, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

According to the Geological Survey, people typically report feeling earthquakes larger than about magnitude 2.5.

The closer to the surface an earthquake occurs, the more ground shaking and potential damage it will cause.

Shaken, not surprised: San Ramon officials urge preparedness amid surge in earthquake swarms

SAN RAMON, Calif. (KRON) — California is known for many things, like its beautiful hills, mountains, and valleys, but it was earthquakes that created this landscape.

“We live here in earthquake country,” said Angie Lux. “Which is a reminder for us to be prepared for the next earthquake.”

Lux is a project scientist for Earthquake Early Warning at the Berkeley Seismological Laboratory. She hosted a public educational earthquake safety town hall at the San Ramon Community Center on Friday.

The topic focused on was the recent earthquake activity in the area. Officials report that about 100 earthquakes have occurred in San Ramon over the past 30 days.

Rattled San Ramon residents attend town hall over quakes

Hundreds of San Ramon Valley residents turned up at a town hall to hear from a seismologist and first responders about a recent uptake in quakes.

SAN RAMON, Calif. –  Hundreds of San Ramon residents attended a town hall Friday to talk about recent swarms of earthquakes that have rattled the region.

They heard from first responders and a seismologist who admitted there's no such thing as forecasting quakes.

"So we can't tell you that there's going to be another big earthquake – and we also can't tell you that there's not going to be another big earthquake," Dr. Angie Lux of the Berkeley Seismology Lab said. "We do know that this has been a very energetic swarm."
