5.4 magnitude earthquake strikes off Kyushu coast
1st March 2026 – (Tokyo) A magnitude 5.4 earthquake struck off the western coast of the Satsuma Peninsula in Japan at around 6pm local time on 1st March, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA). The quake originated at a depth of approximately 130 kilometres beneath the seabed.
The JMA reported that the strongest tremors, measuring level 3 on Japan’s seismic intensity scale, were recorded in Miyazaki and Kagoshima prefectures. Authorities confirmed that the earthquake is not expected to trigger a tsunami.
