NYC nurse strike: thousands of union hospital workers hit the picket line

NEW YORK (WABC) — Nearly 15,000 nurses across New York City are now on strike after no agreement was reached ahead of the deadline for contract negotiations.

The hospital locations impacted by the strike include Mount Sinai Hospital, Mount Sinai Morningside, Mount Sinai West, Montefiore Hospital and New York Presbyterian Hospital.

The union says it wants higher pay and safer working conditions for its members.

"The safety and wellbeing of this city is my top priority and ensuring New Yorkers have the care they need is critical, especially during flu season. The city's Emergency Management team, FDNY, health department, public hospital system, and my senior leadership team are in constant communication and closely monitoring the situation. We are prepared for any and all scenarios, including a strike.

NURSES STRIKE IMMINENT: 14,000 NYC caregivers ready to walk off job Monday morning as contract talks stall

More than 14,000 private-sector nurses are set to go on strike Monday morning at major hospitals throughout NYC, barring a stunning eleventh-hour deal with management, New York State Nurses Association (NYSNA) representatives said on Sunday.

Nancy Hagans, RN, president of NYSNA, said on Jan. 11 that NYSNA nurses at Mount Sinai Hospital locations will strike at 6 a.m. on Jan. 12, followed by Montefiore and NewYork-Presbyterian hospitals at 7 a.m. Monday. Hagans said nurses will not walk out if management at the three locations meets the nurses’ demands on improving workplace safety and staffing standards—key items that have been sticking points throughout the negotiation process.

Nearly 15,000 nurses are walking off the job at hospitals across Manhattan and the Bronx on Monday morning after contract talks with hospitals faltered over the weekend.

The New York State Nurses Association, making good on strike threats announced weeks ago, sent the first picket lines up before 6 a.m. outside the affected medical centers, which are operated by Montefiore Medical Center, Mount Sinai Health System and NewYork-Presbyterian.

Outside Mount Sinai Hospital in Harlem early Monday, striking nurses bundled up against the cold chanted "the nurses united will never be defeated" as they cheered on each other.
