San Francisco's mayor signs reparations fund ordinance for city's Black residents

San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie is facing both praise and pushback after signing a measure to create a reparations fund for the city's Black residents. Notably the fund does not include any taxpayer money for direct payouts.

SAN FRANCISCO – Mayor Daniel Lurie has signed an ordinance establishing a reparations fund for Black residents in San Francisco, a move supporters say acknowledges historic harm. Critics argue it is unnecessary, legally questionable and potentially costly, even without city funding.

The measure, which passed the Board of Supervisors unanimously on December 16, establishes a fund for reparations for Black residents who can demonstrate they experienced a proven harm in San Francisco.

SAN FRANCICO (KGO) — San Francisco is taking another step towards possibly paying reparations to some African-American citizens.

Mayor Daniel Lurie signed a measure last week to create a fund to help Black residents harmed by past city laws.

The measure, however, does not allocate any city dollars for those payouts; Lurie says the city doesn't have the money for it. Instead, it's establishing a place to hold contributions.

Lurie issued a statement, saying in part: "For several years, communities across the city have been working with government to acknowledge the decades of harm done to San Francisco's Black community…If there is private funding that can be dedicated to this fund, we stand ready to ensure that funding gets to those who are eligible for it."
