Why Tony Dungy believes Kyle Shanahan is top candidate for NFL Coach of the Year

With so many absences on the 49ers' roster, former head coach and Football Night in America’s Tony Dungy believes that Kyle Shanahan deserves to be considered for the 2025 NFL Coach of the Year.

The former Indianapolis Colts and Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach spoke to NBC Sports Bay Area and shared why Shanahan deserves credit for the 49ers being in contention for the No. 1 seed in the NFC.

“I think it's a tribute to Coach Shanahan, how he's been able to keep things together, to keep people believing,” Dungy said. “To adjust for the loss of these guys, do things a little bit differently, and it's been an amazing job coaching. That's all I can say. I don't know who I'm going to vote for yet, but he's definitely right there at the top.”

No Super Bowl talk at 49ers’ offseason gathering. Now they can reach it without leaving home

If the San Francisco 49ers win their next five games — all at home at Levi’s Stadium — they will be Super Bowl champions.

The next two contests close out the regular season — starting Sunday night against the Chicago Bears and next week against the Seattle Seahawks — and two wins would give the 49ers the No. 1 seed in the NFC and home-field advantage in the playoffs.

The bar has risen quite a bit for the 49ers (11-4) since defensive stalwarts Nick Bosa and Fred Warner went down in weeks 3 and 6, respectively, and even way back to a spring team gathering at coach Kyle Shanahan’s house. Shanahan, unlike previous years, said the goal wasn’t Super Bowl or bust. The team just had too much turnover and was counting on too many young players.
