Iraqi PM Affirms Continued Cooperation with UN Following UNAMI’s Mandate Conclusion
Baghdad / NINA/- Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia' Al-Sudani affirmed the continuity of relations between Iraq and the United Nations, as well as ongoing cooperation within joint bilateral programs.
This came during his meeting with Mohamed Al-Hassan, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General, on the occasion of the conclusion of his mission in Iraq and the end of the mandate of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI). Al-Sudani expressed his appreciation to Al-Hassan and all UNAMI staff for their efforts and the support they have provided to Iraq across various fields since the fall of the former dictatorial regime until today.

The UN Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI) prepares to conclude its operations, after 22 years of service and a long and difficult road to peace, security and stability.The Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Iraq, Mohammed Al Hassan, briefed members for the final time, stating “Today, indeed, is a great day for the international community and the United Nations to witness an honourable and dignified closure of a UN mission.”
The UN Assistance Mission in Iraq was established by the Security Council resolution 1500 of 2003 at the request of the Government of Iraq, and revised under resolution 1770 in 2007. At the time, in 2003, the country was “grappling with the effects of decades of dictatorship, regional wars, internal conflicts, foreign occupation, and the terror of Da’esh” Mohammed Al Hassan recalled.The current mandate encompasses a variety of areas including the provision of advice, support and assistance to the Iraqi government and the people of Iraq on advancing inclusive political dialogue and national and community-level reconciliation.

UN Special Representative and Head of UNAMI Visits AUIS, Highlighting the Role of Youth and Education
Dr. Mohamed Al Hassan, Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq and Head of UNAMI, visited the American University of Iraq, Sulaimani (AUIS), where he met with AUIS President Dr. Bilal A. Wahab as part of his farewell engagements concluding his mission in Iraq.
During the meeting, discussions focused on the role of higher education in shaping Iraq’s future, with emphasis on youth empowerment, critical thinking, and the responsibility of universities in nation-building.
Dr. Al Hassan stressed the importance of education that meets international standards while remaining rooted in local culture and values, highlighting AUIS as a model institution that integrates academic excellence with cultural authenticity. He commended the university’s commitment to critical thinking, quality education, and civic responsibility.
