GM Is Committed To Keeping The C9 Corvette Affordable, Chief Engineer Says
The Daily Brief wraps up the biggest stories and our exclusive reporting on the auto industry and car culture.
What’s in store for the C9 Corvette? Chevy is still putting the finishing touches on the C8 lineup, but now that we have the full lineup in showrooms, we can’t help but wonder what’s coming next. So when we had the opportunity to interview Corvette chief engineer Tony Roma, we jumped at the chance to ask about the future of the program, and he was surprisingly candid about what the company thinks the C9 should and shouldn’t be.
Upcoming Corvette C9 won’t compete with Lamborghini & Ferrari
The next-gen Chevrolet Corvette C9 may be faster and more capable than the current car, but Chevrolet has no intention of turning it into a Lamborghini or Ferrari rival.
Corvette chief engineer Tony Roma says the C9 must remain true to what has always made the Corvette appealing: strong performance and value. “It needs to be a Corvette at its core,” Roma explained, adding that the new model should offer customers more performance without abandoning its value proposition.
The move to a mid-engine layout with the C8 has already pushed the Corvette into supercar territory, but Roma doesn’t believe that means Chevrolet needs to chase European exotics head-on.
