Man who heckled Abdul El-Sayed is former Josh Hawley aide, records show
Thomas Teepell, who worked for Republican senator, demanded El-Sayed disavow Muslim Brotherhood
A man who heckled the Democratic candidate for Senate Abdul El-Sayed and demanded he disavow the Muslim Brotherhood at a Michigan town hall is a former aide to the Republican senator Josh Hawley, according to congressional staff records.
At the event on Saturday, an attender who gave his name only as “Tommy” shouted from the crowd, asking whether El-Sayed would disavow the movement. El-Sayed answered: “Sure, yeah, absolutely,” then turned the question around, asking whether the man assumed he wouldn’t.
Tommy said he had simply not heard El-Sayed reject the Muslim Brotherhood, one of the Arab world’s oldest and most influential Islamist movements. Under Trump the US has moved to designate certain chapters of the group as foreign terrorist organizations.
What Republicans mean when they ask Abdul El-Sayed to ‘disavow’ the Muslim Brotherhood
At a town hall event in Caro, Michigan, over the weekend, a man in the audience asked Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed, âWill you disavow the Muslim Brotherhood?â
El-Sayed immediately recognized it as something more. âSure. Yeah, absolutely,â he replied, then turned it back on the man: âWhy are you asking the question?â
Why was a Michigan-born Democratic nominee being asked about the Muslim Brotherhood, a transnational Middle Eastern Islamist organization? Throughout the Senate campaign, Republicans, including President Donald Trump and the GOP candidate, Mike Rogers, have sought to associate El-Sayed, the son of Egyptian immigrants, with Islamic extremism.
On Saturday, Michigan Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed responded to an attendee who asked him to disavow the Muslim Brotherhood, saying he's "running for Senate and happens to be Muslim."
