The staggering $446m Elon Musk has spent on the US midterms – visualized
The tech mogulâs midterm donations backing Republicans have made him the largest single-cycle political donor in modern US history
Elon Musk has poured so much money into US politics this midterms election cycle that his donations could fund half a dozen SpaceX rocket launches or buy thousands of Tesla Cybertrucks. At the Tesla Diner in Los Angeles, Musk could order more than 31.9m cheeseburgers with the money he has spent on the midterms.
Musk, the worldâs richest person, has funnelled at least $445.77m into Republican-aligned political action committees (Pacs) and groups since last year, according to US Federal Election Commission data as of 29 October. The contributions have made him the Republicansâ most prominent financial backer and the largest single-cycle political donor in modern US history.
Opinion | We have more money than ever in politics. Ordinary voters are still left holding the bag.
When the richest man in the world has easy access to power thanks to his political donations, voters have to make clear that does not give him a pass on accountability.
More than anything else, Tuesday’s midterm elections will really show us what “power” means in this country.
Is it held by the wealthier-than-ever elites throwing mountains of money into the midterms to protect the status quo?
Or will it be power to the people — those who want to curb President Donald Trump and his overreach, or even those who are fed up with the whole system and want to upend the establishment?

Elon Musk has given more to politics in 18 months than George Soros has personally in his lifetime
In May 2025, Elon Musk said he was pulling back from political spending.
“I think in terms of political spending, I’m going to do a lot less in the future,” Musk said in an interview with Bloomberg at the Qatar Economic Forum. “I think I’ve done enough.”
He then left room to change course: “Well, if I see a reason to do political spending in the future, I will do it,” he said. “I don’t currently see a reason.”
He had just finished the 2024 election cycle as the country’s biggest political donor, according to OpenSecrets. That year, he gave $291.5 million, all to Republicans. The next-largest donor, Timothy Mellon, gave $197 million.
