Gillespie may soon be one of Spurs’ secret weapons
After a 126-97 rout against the Sacramento Kings, the San Antonio Spurs’ preseason came to a harmonious close. While going 2-3 through five games, the record matters little, but the rookie class used the stage to flash real promise. Point guard Ja’Kobi Gillespie, the 22-year-old selected with the 42nd pick in June, used garbage time to hit three of four shots from behind the arc in the fourth quarter. Gillespie finished the game with 11 points in ten minutes and zero turnovers.
While most of the new draft picks gave it their all for both Friday’s game and the entire preseason, few took better advantage than Gillespie. Gillespie’s athleticism shined as the rookie had an adept performance against the Utah Jazz last Monday, scoring 25 points, including 15 in the fourth quarter. Gillespie also had 13 points and four assists in last Wednesday’s matchup against the Phoenix Suns in a Spurs victory. Across five exhibition games, Gillespie averaged 12 points in 14 minutes per game, shooting an impressive 48.8% from the field and 50% from 3-point range. This is, of course, a very small sample size against varying opponents, but Gillespie deserves credit.
