K-pop giants Stray Kids join BTS in boycotting the Grammys

One of the world's biggest K-pop groups, Stray Kids, are joining BTS in boycotting the 2027 Grammy Awards.

The move comes after the introduction of a controversial new category for Asian pop music, which critics fear will ghettoise genres like K-Pop and J-Pop.

BTS announced they would not submit songs for consideration in any category in July, saying they hoped their music "can be heard and loved for what it is, rather than being divided by region or language".

Stray Kids, who recently scored their ninth US number one album, have now followed suit. In a short statement, their record label JYP simply said: "Stray Kids did not submit for the Grammys."

Without BTS, Who Could Get An Asian Pop Grammy Nomination?

The global K-pop juggernaut declined to submit itself to Recording Academy voters, leaving a wide open race in their wake.

With two of K-pop’s biggest names out of the running — in addition to BTS, Blackpink’s four all-English songs from February’s Deadline won’t qualify due to the Recording Academy’s rule that nominees “must feature meaningful use of one or more Asian languages” — the race is wide open for the potential nominees in the much-discussed new Asian pop performance category’s first year.

The K-pop quartet spent this eligibility year building its U.S. profile with a Lollapalooza debut, a North American arena tour through the fall, plus collaborations with Anderson .Paak, Becky G and Ty Dolla $ign. This pulsating electronic-pop track sung in both English and Korean peaks in a bridge showcasing Winter and Ningning’s harmonies before the production drops out ahead of a run of Winter’s belts.

Stray Kids Join BTS in Sitting Out Grammy Awards

Popular K-pop group Stray Kids let the submission window for the 69th Grammy Awards close without entering any music, their agency JYP Entertainment confirmed on Friday, joining BTS in sitting out the ceremony.

The agency confirmed to local media that the group filed no entry before the Aug. 21 submission deadline, but offered no explanation for the move and would not confirm whether the new Asian Pop category played any part in it. Under Grammy rules, music not formally submitted cannot appear on the nomination screening ballots or go on to compete for a win.

All eight Stray Kids members — Bang Chan, Lee Know, Changbin, Hyunjin, Han, Felix, Seungmin and I.N — received invitations this year to become Recording Academy voters, a role that lets them help pick nominees and winners even though they kept their own music out of the running.
