1970 Rock Pioneer, Ex Queen Bassist Who Played with Freddie Mercury Dies at 76
Barry Mitchell, the rock musician who played bass alongside Freddie Mercury in Queen's earliest lineup and later earned his own place in rock history as a member of one of Britain's first proto-punk bands, has died.
His passing was confirmed by Greg Brooks, Queen's official archivist, in a Facebook post honoring the musician. "Terribly sad news just received that early Queen bass player… has passed away," Brooks wrote, adding that Mitchell's stories at fan conventions "were fascinating and offered rare insight."
The connection to Mercury dates back to August 1970, when Mitchell joined Queen as its second bassist, stepping in after original member Mike Grose departed. Over the next six months, Mitchell played 13 gigs alongside Mercury, Brian May, and Roger Taylor, reportedly laying down the original bass lines for early songs including "Liar" and "Son and Daughter." He left the band in January 1971, and after a brief stint by another bassist, John Deacon joined to complete Queen's classic lineup.
