KANSAS CITY — The Cubs’ haul at the Trade Deadline has been on display at Kauffman Stadium for the past two nights. On Saturday evening, it was Clay Holmes’ turn to take the mound for his debut with the ballclub, following Kevin Gausman one night earlier.
Unfortunately for the North Siders, Royals slugger Jac Caglianone tormented the Cubs’ staff on Saturday, launching two home runs and adding a pair of doubles to help send Chicago to a 6-3 loss. Holmes went four innings in his first outing since mid-May, taking an important first step in settling into the Cubs’ rotation.

The Royals learned something about themselves on their homestand, writes Anne Rogers.
“It was great to have Bobby back, first and foremost, and to be healthy,” manager Matt Quatraro said. “I was really happy to be able to put him in there today. Jac, obviously, had a huge day [Saturday], and we saw a lot of mature at-bats from him throughout the homestand.”
There’s no doubt that the Royals have a lot of work to do this offseason to remake their pitching staff, add to the offense and get back to competing in ‘27, which they’ve stated is their goal. The reason why just played out in front of us this week: Witt is a star, Caglianone is emerging as one, and those two anchor a core the Royals believe they can win with right now.

The Opener: Jac, Pitching Milestones, Jump
Royals slugger Jac Caglianone put together the signature performance of his young career in a 6-3 win over the Cubs on Saturday. In going 4-for-4 with two home runs, a pair of doubles and four RBI, the 23-year-old helped spoil newly acquired right-hander Clay Holmes‘ Cubs debut. Along with reaching the 20-HR mark for the first time, Caglianone became the seventh Royal to collect four extra-base hits in a game (h/t: Sarah Langs of MLB.com).
Caglianone, the sixth pick in the 2024 draft, was among the game’s premier prospects when the Royals promoted him to the majors in June 2025. However, he came out of the gates slowly and hit a dismal .157/.237/.295 with seven homers over a 62-game, 232-plate appearance span. Caglianone’s 46 wRC+ ranked 344th out of 348 hitters who amassed 200-plus trips to the plate, but his production has taken huge steps forward this year. The outfielder/first baseman has slashed .256/.311/.456 (110 wRC+) across 108 games and 418 PA. This has been a lost season for the 49-69 Royals, but Caglianone’s emergence as a foundational player in their Bobby Witt Jr.-led core is an obvious silver lining. Good for you, Jac!
