Bills on chemical irritants pass the Legislature after advocacy by Colin Hortman
Following the assassination of his parents last June, Colin Hortman couldn’t complete the clean up of their home for months because it was unclear what chemicals were deployed during the police response and how they needed to be cleaned up.
Now, a new bill has moved forward in the Minnesota legislature that would require police departments and law enforcement to disclose details about the use of any chemical irritants, flash bangs, or smoke screens during a police response.
Another accompanying bill would require homeowner’s insurance to cover any damage done to a home from the use of a chemical irritant during an arrest or the execution of a search warrant.
Virtual currency kiosks banned in Spokane Valley after scam causes suicide
Scammers may have a harder time ripping off people in Spokane Valley after its city council voted unanimously Tuesday to ban virtual currency kiosks.
While there were no comments from council members or the public on the vote, the ban is a significant move for the city to prevent scammers from taking people’s life savings, police Chief Dave Ellis said. There has been a surge of fraud cases in the Valley, several resulting in major financial losses and, in one case, a suicide.
“Those kiosks are a tool to facilitate scams,” Ellis said. “People are being scammed and being directed to use them by bad actors, by criminals, to transfer money to them.”
