FEMA approves $4.6M for Hawaii disaster preparedness

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – About $4.6 million in federal funding was approved Friday to help Hawaii become more resilient to natural disasters.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency approved more than $137 million as part of the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program.

Funding will be distributed to at least 50 projects nationwide, including Hawaii, Nevada, and Guam, to improve natural disaster response.

Federal funding aims to address the electrical grids on Hawaii Island and Maui. Tens of thousands experienced power outages across the state during the Kona low storms.

In response, FEMA approved more than $3.8 million to fund upgrades to the Energy Management System platform, which is the primary support for the two islands’ electrical grids.

Nevada secures more than $500,000 from FEMA for wildfire mitigation

Nevada will receive at least $500,000 from the federal government for costs associated with mitigation following wildfires as part of a $5.2 million funding package by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

More than $500,000 in Nevada was awarded for two Hazard Mitigation Program post fire awards to cover direct and indirect costs for mitigation projects in the aftermath of wildfires, according to FEMA in a news release Friday.

The Hazard Mitigation Program develops plans and manages grants that reduce or eliminate long-term risks to people and property. It is responsible for developing the Enhanced Statewide Mitigation Plan, which identifies and ranks hazards and develops mitigation strategies for each hazard, according to the Nevada Office of Emergency Management / Homeland Security.
