R.I. grandparents will not be allowed visits with their granddaughter after judge dismisses their case
WARWICK, R.I. â A Family Court judge on Thursday dismissed a petition by two retired physicians seeking visits with their granddaughter over their son-in-lawâs objections, ending a bitter and lengthy trial.
Judge Felix Gill said although he believed it would be in the best interests of 4-year-old Laila to see her maternal grandparents, Dr. Siavash Ghoreishi and Dr. Jila Khorsand, he refused to grant them visitation. The judge said the couple had loved and cared for Laila since she was born, and they were the connection to her late mother, Shahrzad âSherryâ Naso.
However, Gill said, they failed to overcome the high bar set by the state law allowing grandparents visitation rights â to prove that their son-in-law, Scott Naso, was unreasonable in his decision to keep them from seeing his daughter.

Single Dad Says Grandparents’ Rights Trial Has Cost Him More Than $500K, but He'll Do ‘Whatever It Takes’ to Keep Daughter Safe
Scott Naso is challenging Rhode Island's grandparents' visitation law, claiming it infringes on parents' constitutional rights
The case involves allegations against his late wife's parents, both doctors, for medical misconduct and negligence
“If you're a parent in the state of Rhode Island and assume that you have a fundamental right to raise your child without the government unjustifiably interfering with that, you're wrong. I'm living proof," he said in a statement just days before the trial is set to resume
As the two-year anniversary of his wife's death approaches, widowed single father Scott Naso is sounding an alarm to fellow parents across the country — and especially in Rhode Island, where he lives with his now 4-year-old daughter, Laila.
