SAVE Act Successfully Stalled in Senate as a Result of Tireless Advocacy on Behalf of American Voters
The Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) America Act, a dangerous attempt to impose onerous and discriminatory obstacles for voters at the risk of disenfranchising millions, has currently failed to move forward in the U.S. Senate. Donald Trump and his allies have been touting the “SAVE Act” as a measure to reduce what they claim is “rampant” voting by noncitizens. The SAVE Act, short for the “Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act,” would require people registering to vote in federal elections to document that they are American citizens.
The SAVE Act takes the form of a series of amendments to the National Voter Registration Act of 1993. However, its underlying philosophy is diametrically opposite to that of the earlier law. The findings and purposes of the 1993 act make it very clear that its purpose was to force states to remove their barriers to registering and voting, particularly among Black Americans living in the South.

Future for voter ID bill unclear in Senate
Five weeks ago, Senate Republicans said they were bracing for an extended fight as they kicked off debate on their marquee election overhaul bill. Now, they have quietly set aside what’s known as the SAVE America Act.
The question is: For how long? And is there an appetite to return to debating a bill that currently doesn’t have a chance for passage?
It’s unclear what the future looks like for the legislation, which would require proof of citizenship to register to vote and photo ID at the polls. Republicans haven’t garnered the Democratic support they would need for passage under the chamber’s 60-vote threshold. Nor has the “extended floor debate” changed the minds of most Senate Republicans when it comes to blowing up the chamber’s rules on the filibuster to lower that threshold to 51.
