HBO boss Casey Bloys hints The Last of Us could end with season 3, as Craig Mazin maps out the final chapter of the hit drama.
HBO is staying in business with The Last of Us showrunner Craig Mazin – even if the next season of the post-apocalyptic drama is shaping up to be its last.
A third season was announced back in April 2025, before the second had aired, with Mazin later confirmed to be taking the helm as sole creative helm following the departure of co-showrunner Neil Druckmann.
Speaking to Radio Times, Casey Bloys (chairman and CEO, HBO and Max Content) confirmed that the upcoming run of episodes – which will see Abby (Kaitlyn Dever) take centre stage – is expected to bring the series to a close.

Neil Newbon Hopes Baldur's Gate 3 Fans Give HBO Show A Chance Before Making Their Verdict
Earlier this year, HBO announced a Baldur's Gate TV series set after the events of the third game. The news was contentious, to say the least, as fans voiced concern over the story continuing without Larian Studios at the helm, which was only compounded by the tepid response to The Last of Us season two. And while publishing director Michael Douse was among the skeptical, writing on X, "I genuinely don't think anyone can trump our writers," Astarion actor Neil Newbon hopes that people will give the show a chance before drawing conclusions.
"I really hope people give them the space to make the show that they want to make," he said in an interview with FRVR. "It's really important that artistic endeavors are left to cook. What they'll do with it, who knows? But [showrunner Craig Mazin is] an amazing writer. I think he's a great showrunner as well. I think Chernobyl is a great example of how good his writing is, man.
