Map: 2.3-Magnitude Earthquake Reported North of New York City

A minor, 2.3-magnitude earthquake struck about 12 miles north of New York City on Tuesday, according to the United States Geological Survey.

The temblor happened at 10:17 a.m. Eastern in Sleepy Hollow, N.Y., data from the agency shows.

As seismologists review available data, they may revise the earthquake’s reported magnitude. Additional information collected about the earthquake may also prompt U.S.G.S. scientists to update the shake-severity map.

Small earthquake in Sleepy Hollow shakes parts of Westchester County

SLEEPY HOLLOW, New York (WABC) — The U.S. Geological Survey said a 2.3-magnitude earthquake struck just before 10:30 a.m. near Sleepy Hollow.

It happened around 10:17 about half a mile west of Sleepy Hollow and USGS officials tell ABC News that they do not expect any damage reports.

NYC Emergency Management said the earthquake, which was about 20 miles north of the city, may have been felt in nearby areas like the Bronx.

Magnitude 2.3 earthquake rattles Westchester County, N.Y., USGS says

An earthquake rattled parts of Westchester County, N.Y. Tuesday morning. 

The 2.3 magnitude earthquake struck in Sleepy Hollow, N.Y. at around 10:15 a.m., the United States Geological Survey said. It struck about 4.5 miles below ground. 

Sleepy Hollow is located roughly 25 miles north of New York City. 

More than 900 people reported to the USGS that they had felt it. 

The Richter Scale, which runs 1-9, measures earthquakes, with 9 being the strongest. Quakes below 3.0 magnitude are considered relatively weak. 

An active fault line known as the Ramapo Fault runs from Pennsylvania, through New Jersey, and into New York, and produces a number of typically small earthquakes each year.
