Second largest earthquake in state history shakes north Louisiana
SHREVEPORT, La. (KSLA) – At around 5:30 a.m. on Mar. 5, many residents of north Louisiana reported feeling a shaking sensation throughout their homes.
Confirmation from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) says that there was a magnitude 4.9 earthquake north of Edgefield, La. off of US-71 with a depth of about three miles.
This is the second largest earthquake in the history of Louisiana. The first being the 5.3 magnitude earthquake that occurred in Grand Isle, La. on Feb. 9, 2006.

Louisiana rocked by strongest earthquake in state history
A magnitude 4.9 earthquake rattled Louisiana on Thursday morning, striking 36 miles south-southeast of Shreveport, Louisiana, according to the USGS. Preliminarily, it is the biggest earthquake recorded in state history.
The earthquake happened around 5:30 a.m. CST and occurred just 3.1 miles (5 km) below the surface.
There have been no immediate reports of significant damage in the area.
Earthquakes of this magnitude are rare in Louisiana. Since early December, northwestern Louisiana has recorded eight earthquakes, ranging from magnitude 2.6 to 3.1.
It is the strongest earthquake to rattle this part of the United States since a magnitude 4.8 earthquake struck Timpson, Texas, on May 17, 2012. The epicenter of that quake was about 57 miles west of the tremor that struck Louisiana on Thursday morning.
