Dodgers Free Agent Rumors: Michael Conforto Signs With Cubs

Michael Conforto was looking to re-establish himself when he signed a one-year contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers before the 2025 season, but nothing went as he hoped.

Conforto posted the worst season of his career, batting just .199/.305/.333 with 12 home runs, 54 runs scored, 36 RBI and an 83 wRC+.

The Dodgers spent the offseason working with Conforto on his swing, and that continued throughout the year. Despite a few weeks of positive results, things never clicked for the left-handed hitter.

That limited Conforto’s market as he re-entered free agency and began looking for a fresh start. He has now found that as according to Jon Heyman of MLB Network, Conforto is signing with the Chicago Cubs:

Astros Showing Interest In Michael Conforto

The Astros have been seeking a lefty-hitting outfielder for much of the offseason and have shown some recent interest in Michael Conforto, reports Brian McTaggart of MLB.com. McTaggart adds that Houston’s chances of trading infielder Isaac Paredes have “diminished” recently. Houston has reportedly been exploring the possibility of adding another lefty bat by way of a Paredes trade.

Conforto, 33 on March 1, is coming off a career-worst season with the Dodgers, wherein he slashed .199/.305/.333 in 486 trips to the plate. It’s the first decidedly below-average offensive performance in the big league career of the 2014 first-round pick and 2017 All-Star. That said, Conforto’s career has been on a downward trajectory since a shoulder injury caused him to miss the 2022 season.

Did Astros Miss the Boat in Trade Market?

Team could be looking at an infield logjam that could compromise their outfield depth.

In the aftermath of Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reporting that the Astros could be looking at OF Michael Conforto as a left-handed hitting option in the outfield primarily because they are finding their trade options dwindling, it is impossible not to consider this very serious idea:

Houston has been shopping players on its major league roster all offseason. Isaac Paredes is the most valuable of the names often mentioned, but Christian Walker and Jake Meyers names have also been mentioned.

We have seen reports of the high interest in both Paredes and Meyers, and of the very faint interest in Walker, but for a team with obvious roster holes it seems unconscionable that GM Dana Brown was unable to deal from his infield surplus to fix at least one hole in his roster. It doesn’t even matter if that hole addressed the outfield, the bullpen, or backup catcher situation, as long as it addressed something.
