Scam text alert: ERCOT warns Texans of fake outage messages

To stream KVUE on your phone, you need the KVUE app.

AUSTIN, Texas — The state's power grid operator, ERCOT, is reminding Texans it does not text people directly to share information about power grid conditions.

Some Texans have been getting text messages claiming to be from ERCOT, saying there will be rolling power outages starting Saturday night. Those texts are part of a scam and not real.

A spokesperson for the grid operator told KVUE ERCOT will communicate grid conditions through its official communication channels, like its website, and through the "TXANS" notification system.

ERCOT said grid conditions are expected to remain normal as a winter storm hits Texas this weekend, but a Weather Watch has been issued from Saturday through Tuesday due to higher electricity demand. ERCOT said it will continue to monitor conditions.

ERCOT warns of scams and false information during winter storm

BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – As Texas braces for severe winter weather this weekend, the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) is warning residents to beware of scammers impersonating the grid operator.

ERCOT does not send text messages about grid conditions. The agency communicates through official channels only:

ERCOT officials warn about fake text messages as winter weather threatens the grid

HOUSTON — As winter weather moves into Texas, the Electric Reliability Council of Texas is warning residents to be cautious of false information and people impersonating ERCOT during the storm. The agency said Friday afternoon it does not send text messages to share information about grid conditions and urged Texans to rely only on official channels for accurate updates.

In a post shared at 5:37 p.m. Saturday, ERCOT said grid condition information is communicated through its official website, ercot.com, the Texas Advisory and Notification System, Emergency Alerts, its verified social media channels and the ERCOT mobile app. The warning comes as winter weather is expected to impact parts of the state, including Southeast Texas, this weekend and into Monday.
