Oregon farmer’s John Deere collection led to national Farm Bureau role

CANBY, Ore. — Roy Hofer grows hazelnuts and is a “history nut” — a barn on his acreage holds a private farm machinery museum focusing on John Deere tractors.

In a roundabout way, the collection led to him becoming an American Farm Bureau Federation Young Farmers & Ranchers Committee member for 2026-27.

After graduating from college, Hofer disappeared into farming and work and felt isolated.

He got involved with the Clackamas County Farm Bureau to share agricultural history with like-minded folks.

The 35-year-old recalled attending his first meeting and thinking, “‘Wow, these are really my people.’ It’s a great way for farmers to get together.”

John Deere Models A and B Drive Historic Corporate Transformation

John Deere & Co. successfully navigated the Great Depression by launching the Model A and Model B tractors, a strategic pivot that transformed the company into a full-line manufacturer. The transition followed a period of severe economic decline that had forced the temporary closure of its tractor production facilities after 1930.

Market pressures intensified as tractor manufacturers dwindled from 193 to 38 by 1930, and Deere faced significant competition from the International Harvester Farmall Regular. In response, Deere president Charles Wiman established a Power Farming committee in 1931 to develop versatile machinery suited for varying farm sizes and crop types.

The development was led by engineer Theo Brown and designer Elmer McCormick, resulting in the March 1934 debut of the GP-A, later known as the Model A. The smaller Model B followed later that year, featuring advancements like pneumatic tires and the Power Lift hydraulic system that surpassed existing models from Case and Oliver.
