‘Bookish’: Mark Gatiss Unlocks the Secret of His ‘Delightful’ New PBS British Murder Mystery
If there is one thing to know about Mark Gatiss, it’s that he likes a spicy mystery. And certainly the prolific creator’s Bookish falls into that category. The six-part murder drama set in post-World War II London sees the Emmy and Peabody winner step into the pseudo gumshoes of Gabriel Book (yes, his last name is book!), an antiquarian bookshop owner who helps police solve crimes.
Gatiss, known for other work such as Sherlock, Doctor Who, and The League of Gentlemen, brings his signature wit and cleverness to this project as well. The 59-year-old not only stars but co-wrote Bookish along with Matthew Sweet. Helping bring the 1940s set vision to life is director Carolina Giammetta.

Murder mystery ‘Bookish’ makes the most of its postwar setting
The detective show may be one of the more sturdy TV formulas: gather the right setting and some appealingly thorny cases, then set loose a sufficiently compelling crime solver among a good supporting cast, and you’ve got a decent show on your hands. “Bookish,†premiering Jan. 11 on PBS at 10 p.m., is the latest take on the genre. Mark Gatiss, who bears some credit for launching Benedict Cumberbatch’s career after co-creating “Sherlock,†here takes the lead as Gabriel Book, an antiquarian bookseller who assists the police department in his spare time.
The show’s setting is one of its most distinct choices; the action takes place in a London only just emerging from the various traumas and losses of World War II, and its storytelling is accordingly imbued with a deep sadness. Book is also a closeted gay man in a lavender marriage with his childhood friend, Trottie (Polly Walker), though in the six-episode first season, the show treats this aspect of his life with a relatively light touch.
