Transfer portal: Former Colorado CB DJ McKinney visits Notre Dame

On3 college football insider Pete Nakos reported Friday afternoon that McKinney had signed with Notre Dame after McKinney appeared as such in the NCAA’s transfer portal database. However, moments later, Nakos reported that McKinney’s sign status with Notre Dame has been removed. This story has been updated to reflect that change.

What remains certain is McKinney’s visit to Notre Dame actually occurring Friday. He will be a name to closely follow as ND continues to work toward its first public commitment out of the transfer portal.

According to the regularly updated 2026 On3 Industry Transfer Portal Rankings, McKinney is the No. 263 overall player and the No. 27 cornerback available. He has one year of eligibility remaining.

SOUTH BEND — Notre Dame football is on the board with a transfer portal signing.

After coming up empty in a series of visits and offers at a variety of positions, the Irish reportedly secured a commitment on Friday Jan. 9 from former Colorado defensive back DJ McKinney.

According to On3.com, McKinney visited Notre Dame on Friday after taking previous trips to Ohio State and Texas Tech.

A 6-foot-2, 180-pounder from Colleyville, Texas in the Dallas area, McKinney was a three-star recruit out of high school. He was named honorable mention all-conference by Big 12 coaches in 2024, when he ranked fourth in the league with nine pass breakups.

Colorado transfer cornerback DJ McKinney commits to Notre Dame

Colorado transfer cornerback DJ McKinney is committing to Notre Dame, On3 has learned. He just finished up his junior season with the Buffaloes.

Over his time in college football in Boulder and with Oklahoma State, McKinney has amassed 135 total tackles. He’s picked off four passes, forced a fumble and accumulated 18 total tackles.

Deion Sanders formerly claimed McKinney would be a high first-round pick at the NFL level: “It’s overshadowed to y’all, not to us,” Sanders said when he was asked if McKinney’s impact was overshadowed by Travis Hunter’s prolific play.

“You guys don’t mention him, but we mention him every every moment we can. I mention him every day to the scouts that are asking me about him every single day we practice. DJ is long, he can run, he competes. … The kid can flat out play the game.”
