Stranger Things's Karen Wheeler Was the Hero We Needed All Along

Move over #JusticeforBarb. It turns out that Stranger Things's Karen Wheeler was the one who deserved a fair shake all along. [Warning: Spoilers ahead from volume 2.] Forever masking her boredom with chardonnay and romance novels, Karen Wheeler finally got her due in season five; first when she attacked the Demogorgon with a broken wine bottle, and second, when she warded off famished Demodogs by distracting them with oxygen tanks in the hospital's washing machines, thereby saving the lives of Lucas, Robin, Max, and Vickie. She might have been naive about the happenings in Hawkins for four seasons, but she's certainly in on the action now.

Warning: spoilers are ahead for Stranger Things Season 5 through Volume 2, available streaming now in the 2025 TV schedule with a Netflix subscription.

The wait is nearly over for the very last episode of Stranger Things, after Volume 2 game-changers like Jonathan and Nancy’s “un-proposal” as well as Max waking up from her trance and the setup of handful of possible deaths. There was also room for another heroic moment from a member of the Wheeler family, and I don’t just mean Nancy, Mike, and/or Holly. Karen of all people came in with a big save at a clutch moment, and I cheered her choice while also wondering: why doesn’t anybody care about Ted?

'Stranger Things' star Cara Buono sees more than a 'clueless '80s mom' in Karen Wheeler as final season unfolds

Actress Cara Buono plays Karen Wheeler in Netflix's sci-fi hit 'Stranger Things,' whose fifth and final season will come to end this month. Buono says watching the show's young cast grow up helped her as a mom. Above, a production photo from Season 5.

As Netflix enters the stretch run of the Duffer Brothers' sci-fi epic "Stranger Things," the next batch of episodes in Season 5 will hit the streaming platform on Christmas Day. The finale, a two-hour feature set to screen in more than 500 movie theaters on New Year's Eve, will close the curtains on a cultural phenomenon that has spanned nearly a decade.
