ALERT DAY: Narrow band of strong to severe storms expected this evening
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – A WAVE Weather ALERT DAY is now in place from 7PM to midnight as a narrow band of thunderstorms may produce strong gusty winds ranging from 40 to 60 MPH and perhaps a brief tornado, especially west of I-65.
Much colder air settling in could lead to a few flurries Monday morning. Travel impacts are not expected. Otherwise, a cold and blustery setup Monday as temperatures hold steady in the 20s with wind chills in the single digits and teens all day.
We’ll end up in the teens Monday night beneath mostly clear to partly cloudy skies. It stays chilly Tuesday with a mix of sun and clouds and highs in the 20s and 30s.
Severe weather possible in Louisville amid gusty winds, rain showers
National Weather Service forecasters are monitoring the potential for severe weather in the Louisville area the night of Dec. 28, with the main threat being strong wind gusts of more than 40 mph.
The gusty winds are expected to come from a "thin line of rain showers," which could arrive in Louisville sometime between 9 p.m. and midnight. Temperatures will begin to plummet, falling from around 72 degrees at 6 p.m. to about 33 degrees by 6 a.m. Dec. 29, according to a chart provided by the National Weather Service in Louisville.
Due to the strong winds, Louisville is under a marginal risk for severe weather, the lowest of five categories from the National Weather Service. Jasper, Indiana, and northern Orange and Washington counties in Indiana, are under a slight risk for severe weather, the second-highest category. Storms may arrive in southern Indiana between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m., according to NWS Louisville.
