SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — The owner of a South Dakota hotel who said Native Americans were banned from the establishment was found liable for discrimination against Native Americans on Friday.
A federal jury decided the owner of the Grand Gateway Hotel in Rapid City will pay tens of thousands of dollars in damages to various plaintiffs who were denied service at the hotel. The jury awarded $1 to the NDN Collective, the Indigenous advocacy group that filed the lawsuit.

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) – After a week long trial in federal court in Rapid City, the jury returned a verdict Friday in the discrimination lawsuit filed by NDN Collective against the Retsel Corporation, the owners of the Grand Gateway Hotel.
The lawsuit accused the hotel of discrimination for refusing to rent rooms to Native Americans.
The jury ruled in favor of NDN Collective’s discrimination claim and awarded the group $1 in damages, an amount the organization specifically asked for. Leaders said the symbolic figure underscores that the case was never about financial compensation.
The jury agreed with five individual claims of discrimination from George Bettelyoun, Sunny Red Bear, Bre Jackson, Mary Bowman and Nick Cottier, awarding them a total of compensatory and punitive damages ranging from $8,000 to $25,000.
