Will Stein Named Head Coach of Kentucky Football

For Will Stein, the roots in Kroger Field soil run deep.

A native Kentuckian, Stein is the son of UK alumni – father Matt played football at UK and mother Debbie is an avid fan – and he inherited their passion as he grew up watching the Wildcats in the then-Commonwealth Stadium, section 128, row 13 to be exact. He later competed in the stadium as a collegiate quarterback and assistant coach.

On Monday, the family’s journey came full circle as Stein was named head coach of Kentucky football, as announced by UK Director of Athletics Mitch Barnhart.

“Will Stein brings an outstanding track record of developing elite quarterbacks and leading some of the most dynamic and successful offenses in college football,” Barnhart said. “His deep connection to Kentucky, having grown up attending games in our stadium, gives him a unique passion for this program and this community. We are thrilled to have him leading the Wildcats onto the field next fall, and I know Big Blue Nation will join me in giving a warm welcome to Will, his wife Darby and their children, Joey and Demi.”

Mitch Barnhart believes Will Stein is the 'risk taker' that Kentucky football needs

A new era of Kentucky football is officially underway. Kentucky athletics director Mitch Barnhart just pulled off one of the fastest coaching searches in recent memory. The quick search ended with Will Stein returning home.

The Oregon offensive coordinator grew up going to Kentucky games at Commonwealth Stadium, has posted three consecutive top-10 offenses in Eugene, and understands the quarterback position. All of those stood out as factors to Barnhart.

In an interview with Maggie Davis and Keith Farmer on “BBN Tonight” ahead of Kentucky’s basketball game at Rupp Arena against North Carolina, Barnhart was interviewed about his latest hire for the first time. The long-time administrator pointed out the connections that he had at the Oregon athletic department and how important he believes it is in modern college football to score points.

Kentucky replaces Stoops with Oregon OC Stein

Kentucky hired Oregon offensive coordinator Will Stein as the school's head football coach, it was announced on Monday.

"I'm honored and excited to become the next head coach at Kentucky," Stein said in a statement released by the school. "Growing up in Kentucky and sitting in the stands at UK games as a kid, I could only dream of one day leading the Wildcats. This is truly a dream come true."

Stein agreed to a five-year deal with the Wildcats, sources told ESPN's Pete Thamel.

Stein, 36, is a Kentucky native who has emerged as one of the country's top offensive coordinators and playcallers after working with several notable quarterbacks at Oregon.
