Erdogan wants Meloni to stop smoking, but Macron thinks it’s a lost cause
The Italian prime minister joked that if she cut out tobacco she might kill someone.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s anti-tobacco crusade has a new target: Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
On the sidelines of a peace summit in Egypt aimed at ending the war in Gaza, Erdoğan promised Meloni he would find a way to convince her to stop smoking.
“You look great. But I have to make you stop smoking,” Erdoğan told Meloni, according to footage published by Italian daily Il Foglio and other media.
But French President Emmanuel Macron, who was next to them, was quick to dash Erdoğan’s hopes. “It’s impossible!” he said laughing.

Leaders from around the world convened in Egypt’s Sharm el-Sheikh on Monday for a peace summit aimed at solidifying the ceasefire in Gaza and charting a path toward stability in the Middle East. A short clip from the summit has gone viral on social media.
The video shows Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan smiling and reportedly telling Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, “You look great. I need to get her to quit smoking.” French President Emmanuel Macron can also be seen laughing in the video. Meloni appears visibly embarrassed after the remark.
Turkey has made progress on tobacco control in recent years with bans, regulations, media campaigns and health programs.

President of the Republic Celebrates Peace Agreement
The President of the Republic welcomed this Monday, October 13th, the release of the Israeli hostages in Gaza. Recalling that among the 20 freed hostages are Portuguese nationals, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa highlighted the “importance of this first step towards a fair and lasting Peace”.
“The ceasefire also constitutes a decisive step in this direction”, he added, in a note published on the presidency’s website.
“The President of the Republic hopes that the next steps will materialize as foreseen in President Trump’s Peace Plan and that it will finally be possible for the two States and the people of the region to finally see the future with hope and in Peace”, it further reads.
