Allen Iverson, talking about his new memoir "Misunderstood" on ESPN's "First Take," discussed the lowest point of his life — and it didn't involve anything that happened on a basketball court.
"It was self-inflicted," Iverson told host Stephen A. Smith. "But it was when Tawanna divorced me."
Tawanna Turner and Iverson married in 2001. Iverson's superstardom coincided with their marriage, and just like Iverson's career, it was up and down.
The two split in 2008, and the divorce was final in 2013. That coincided with the end of Iverson's career — he officially retired in October 2013, saying he had no desire to play anymore.

The former NBA star revealed that more than a decade after their 2013 divorce, he and Tawanna are back together, expressing how his longtime love calling time on their marriage ended up being a major turning point for him.
“It was self-inflicted, but Tawanna divorcing me, that’s when I knew I had hit my lowest point and it was time for some deep self-reevaluation,” Allen told Stephen A. Smith on First Take Oct. 8. “I mean, my number one. Obviously, we been together 35 years. If you hang in there that long, it takes a lot to wanna go. And I came to find out afterwards once we got back together.”

During his playing career, Allen Iverson often found himself at the center of attention, good or bad. Now, in a memoir out this week, the former 76ers star guard is aiming to be transparent about his professional and personal life.
“In this book, you’re hearing it from the horse’s mouth,” Iverson told Maurice Dubois during an interview this week on “CBS Mornings” as part of the promotion of his book “Misunderstood.” “You think you know, but you have no idea.”
Iverson was an 11-time All-Star, the NBA’s MVP in 2001, and was named a member of the NBA 75th Anniversary Team in 2021. Now 50, he said in the interview that he has been sober for six months.
