Giants turned down Saquon trade request in '23

A new documentary about Saquon Barkley revealed the running back requested a trade from the New York Giants during a phone call with owner John Mara in the summer of 2023.

The Prime Video documentary "Saquon," which was produced by Martin Scorsese and will be released Thursday before the Giants host the Philadelphia Eagles, shows Barkley asking for the trade on July 17, 2023 — the day the deadline passed for him to sign a long-term deal after the Giants had placed the franchise tag on Barkley several months earlier.

The All-Pro running back played for the Giants during the 2023 season. He signed with the Eagles as a free agent the following year and led them to a Super Bowl title in his first season with the Giants' division rival — a decision that left Mara "sick."

Inside the five-year journey of Saquon Barkley's documentary

Saquon Barkley and Shannon Furman first connected when Barkley was a freshman at Penn State. Furman, who works at NFL Films, spoke to a class at State College and Barkley approached her after the lesson.

The two have stayed in touch ever since, Barkley reaching out from time-to-time with questions about film and how projects like the "Last Dance" documentary on Michael Jordan work.

So, when Barkley's historic 2024 season ended with Midnight Green confetti and a Lombardi Trophy, Furman figured it wouldn't hurt to ask if Barkley wanted to make a film.

Over the last five years, Barkley worked with a camera crew to compile roughly 700 hours of footage across 127 days of filming. He sat down for about 35 interviews, using the camera as his "diary." The filming started on the day of Barkley's ACL surgery in late 2020 and went through his entire first season with the Eagles.

The Athletic has live coverage of Eagles vs. Giants in NFL ‘Thursday Night Football’.

Saquon Barkley spent five years opening his life to a film crew and turning the camera into a personal diary for a documentary titled “SAQUON.” Yet, he predicted that the film bearing his name would spawn a new star.

“I think Jada’s going to be a big star after this,” Barkley said by his locker recently with a smile.

Jada is Barkley’s 7-year-old daughter. Barkley could add film critic to his running back (and documentary subject) résumé, because his prediction is apt. The film, which began shooting in 2020 and debuts Thursday on Amazon Prime, traces Barkley’s career from a devastating knee injury in New York through his contentious contract negotiations with the Giants and into his historic 2,000-yard campaign with the Eagles.
