Ohtani starts tonight instead of Monday; Glasnow scratched with tight back

BALTIMORE — Shohei Ohtani was unexpectedly named the Dodgers' starting pitcher for their opener against the Orioles on Friday night, taking the place of Tyler Glasnow, who was scratched due to back tightness.

Ohtani had been scheduled to start Wednesday but was scratched due to a chest cold, his start originally pushed to Monday. That all changed three hours before first pitch at Camden Yards, where he'll make his 12th start as a Dodger and first since stretching out to five innings for the first time on Aug. 27.

“Shohei was up to it. He feels good physically and wants the ball tonight,” manager Dave Roberts explained pregame. “He says he feels good, and talking with the trainers, everyone that needs to know signed off on it. And most importantly, Shohei.”

Ohtani to start for Dodgers after Glasnow scratched with back stiffness

BALTIMORE (AP) — Shohei Ohtani was scheduled to start for the Los Angeles Dodgers in the opener of a three-game series at the Baltimore Orioles on Friday night after Tyler Glasnow was scratched due to back stiffness.

Ohtani was scratched from his previous start Wednesday due to a cough and manager Dave Roberts projects the five-time All-Star to pitch fewer than five innings.

The two-way star tossed five innings of two-hit ball Aug. 27, allowing one run with nine strikeouts for his first win of the season in a 5-1 decision over the Cincinnati Reds.

“Given the circumstances, could be a little bit shorter (outing),” Roberts said. “He was excited about taking the baseball but it depends on how efficient he is.”

Ohtani to return to mound vs. Rockies on Mon.

PITTSBURGH — Los Angeles Dodgers two-way star Shohei Ohtani will make his next start as a pitcher on Monday against the Colorado Rockies in Los Angeles.

Ohtani was scheduled to start Wednesday at Pittsburgh. However, because of a chest cold, he was limited to designated hitter duties, and Emmet Sheehan started in the Dodgers' loss.

Dodgers catcher Will Smith was not in the lineup for Thursday's game against the Pirates. The three-time All-Star sustained a bruised right hand Wednesday when a foul ball hit him.

Manager Dave Roberts said Smith had a CT scan and is unlikely to play in the three-game series at Baltimore that begins Friday. He doesn't expect Smith to go on the injured list.
