LINO LAKES, Minn. — A man who murdered his entire family with an axe when he was 16 years old was released from a Minnesota prison overnight after serving 35 years of three life sentences.

KARE 11 was told by a guard at the Minnesota Correctional Facility (MCF)-Lino Lakes that David Brom left the facility during the overnight hours. A Department of Corrections spokesperson said last week that Brom will live at an unnamed Twin Cities halfway house while on work release. He will be monitored using a GPS bracelet and receive ongoing case management.

Convicted axe-murderer David Brom released from prison Tuesday on work release

ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) – Tuesday, convicted axe-murderer David Brom of Rochester begins a new life chapter as he leaves prison for work release.

Brom has departed from his Lino Lakes prison cell and will be residing in a halfway house in the Twin Cities area, according to the Minnesota Department of Corrections (DOC) website Tuesday morning.

According to the DOC, this work release involves case management, supervision and GPS monitoring.

Nearly 37 years ago, Brom made headlines as an axe-murderer at the age of 16, killing his father, mother and two younger siblings at their Rochester home in 1988.

Brom pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity, but was convicted of four counts of first-degree murder, receiving three consecutive life sentences.

David Brom, who killed four members of his family with an ax in 1988, released from prison

David Brom, who was a teenager when he killed four members of his family with an ax in their Rochester home, was released early Tuesday from the correctional facility in Lino Lakes.

His status on the Department of Corrections’ website changed to indicate Brom had been assigned to work release. It previously listed him as incarcerated at Lino Lakes.

Brom, 53, will move to a halfway house in the Twin Cities. He will be on work release and subject to GPS monitoring and supervision, according to the Minnesota Department of Corrections.

He was originally given three life sentences — 17½ years per charge — and was expected to be in prison into his 70s. In 2023, the Legislature reduced the minimum time for imprisonment for offenders who were given life sentences when they were under the age of 18.
