Amtrak's Borealis line, from Milwaukee to the Twin Cities, hits 250,000 rider milestone

Less than two months after reaching more than 200,000 riders, the line surpassed more than 250,000 passengers over the Fourth of July weekend, the rail service reported July 15.

"The Borealis continues to be a success story in Wisconsin and our partner states,” said Wisconsin Transportation Secretary Kristina Boardman in a July 15 statement. "This 250,000-rider milestone clearly demonstrates the need for safe, reliable and efficient passenger rail travel options."

The daily route, which offers service from Milwaukee to Chicago and the Twin Cities , began in May 2024 — reaching more than 18,500 passengers in its first month of service. Within its first year, it reached more than 200,000 passengers.

ST PAUL, Minn. — Amtrak and state officials marked a milestone over the Independence Day weekend, welcoming the 250,000th passenger aboard the Borealis line, the state-supported train service connecting the Twin Cities and Chicago.

The national passenger railroad company's daily route from the St. Paul Union Depot to Chicago's Union Station began over a year ago.

"Thanks to the support of our partners, we're honored to have more than a quarter-million customers, and counting, travel on the Borealis train this past year," said Amtrak President Roger Harris in a news release. "Some of these guests have never before used Amtrak. Now all of them can enjoy the benefits of train travel while avoiding the long drive on Interstate 94."
