As Tucker Carlson visits IU, where's line between freedom to speak and freedom to hear?
College campuses have long welcomed controversial speakers, often to the chagrin of opposing students and residents. That disagreement can escalate into clashes that obstruct some people's First Amendment rights.
The Indiana University chapter of Turning Point USA is welcoming former Fox News host Tucker Carlson to campus Oct. 21. It was a stop scheduled on conservative activist Charlie Kirk's American Comeback Tour before he was killed while conducting a question-and-answer session with students at Utah Valley University on Sept. 10.
Carlson's views have prompted some in the Bloomington community to criticize IU for allowing the event to go on and are calling for protests.
Gov. Mike Braun to speak at Turning Point USA event Tuesday at IU Auditorium
Indiana Gov. Mike Braun will speak at the “This is the Turning Point” event Tuesday at IU Auditorium, according to a release from the governor’s office.
The event, headlined by conservative political commentator Tucker Carlson, is slated to begin at 6:30 p.m.
Carlson is speaking in place of TPUSA co-founder Charlie Kirk, a right-wing activist who was shot and killed Sept. 10 during a TPUSA event at Utah Valley University. TPUSA’s IU chapter held a vigil for Kirk on Sept. 14 at the Indiana Memorial Union. Indiana Lt. Gov. Micah Beckwith, U.S. Sen. Todd Young and Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita were among the speakers at the event.

Gov. Mike Braun to speak at Indiana University event honoring Charlie Kirk
Gov. Mike Braun will speak at the Turning Point USA event honoring Charlie Kirk Oct. 21 at Indiana University in Bloomington, where former Fox News host Tucker Carlson is the headliner.
Tonight's event was one of Kirk's planned stops on his American Comeback Tour, a series of college visits featuring the TPUSA founder's signature "prove me wrong" debate style. KIrk was assassinated on Sept. 10 during his stop at Utah Valley University, cementing him as a martyr for conservatives and a flashpoint in the highly polarized culture wars.
The organization Kirk set up at the age of 18 has pledged to continue his work, including this tour.
