Oregon's Dan Lanning questions perceived Big Ten schedule disparities: 'It's almost like they didn't want us'

Teams on the Big Ten's western front face scheduling quirks that create challenges unique to college football in the conference realignment era. USC's Lincoln Riley pointed some of them out this week, and Oregon's Dan Lanning made it clear ahead of his marquee clash with No. 3 Penn State that he is not thrilled with the league's scheduling decisions.

The Nittany Lions are fresh off a bye week, while No. 6 Oregon has a cross-country trip to make on the heels of a rivalry game. That disparity stuck out to Lanning as a potential advantage to Penn State and a jab from the league office at his Ducks.

Canzano: Boots on the ground in Happy Valley

A narrow-body Airbus A320 with turbofan engines carrying the University of Oregon football team left Eugene just after noon PT on Friday. The team charter is estimated to land in State College, Pa., right around 8 p.m. local time.

Football coach Dan Lanning spent his late afternoon on Thursday at his home, relaxing. Well, mostly. Oregon’s coach and I spoke for 20 minutes on the phone, then Lanning jumped in his SUV and headed to a nearby youth football practice to see his son, Titan.

“I get to see the family a little bit,” Lanning said.

When the Ducks played an early-kickoff Saturday game at Northwestern two weeks ago, they flew to the Midwest on a Thursday. Given that Penn State is a 7:30 p.m. ET kickoff on Saturday, Oregon decided to wait and fly eastward on Friday, a day in front of the game.

Dan Lanning blasts Big Ten for tilted schedule ahead of Oregon at Penn State

In an interview with John Canzano of "The Bald-Faced Truth" radio show, Dan Lanning excoriated the Big Ten for its scheduling practices, which have the Oregon Ducks traveling more than any team in the conference while playing seven opponents coming off extra rest, including No. 3 Penn State this Saturday night in Happy Valley, 4:30 p.m. PT on NBC.

"We're traveling 15,000 miles this year, and we play seven teams that have more prep time than we do," Lanning said to John Canzano. "That's unique, isn't it? It's almost like they didn't want us in the Big Ten, or something, right? We snuck our way in, didn't we?"
