Footage of world record holder Joanna Wietrzyk competing on Saturday showed her continuing through demanding exercises and using communal equipment, with faecal matter visibly running down her legs. The incident went viral on social media and triggered debate about Hyrox’s health and safety standards, and athlete responsibility.
Hyrox, an increasingly popular fitness competition launched in Germany in 2017, is now held in locations across the world. It debuted in mainland China in late 2024.

WASHINGTON (TNND) — Organizers of a high-endurance fitness race, the Hyrox, said they will review their procedures after the world champion of the event was permitted to continue competing in the race despite having an accident resulting in soiling herself.
Joanna Wietrzyk, the world champion of the Hyrox, became sick while partaking in the age 16-24 elite event in Beijing on Saturday.
Footage online circulated, showing Wietrzyk with fecal matter running down her legs during the race. Part of the race includes completing eight 1km runs and eight workout stations in the least amount of time possible.
Both Hyrox and Wietrzyk, who won the race with a time of 1 hour, 1 minute and 23 seconds, faced heavy criticism from people online. Many pointed out the health risks posed by Wietrzyk's continued participation in the event.
