Ethan Hawke and Russell Crowe carry ‘The Weight’

All movies are about other movies. They just are. One sign a movie is really good is when you don’t notice the movies it recalls. One sign a movie is really bad is that those other movies are much more interesting than the one you’re watching.

“The Weight” is neither really good nor really bad. So it’s easy to notice the movies it comes from. Among them are “Da 5 Bloods,” “Wages of Fear”/“Sorcerer,” “The Treasure of the Sierra Madre,” “Deliverance,” “Train Dreams,” even “First Cow” (it’s set in Oregon) and “Paper Moon” (father and daughter during the Great Depression). But when “The Weight” has its moments, nearly all of which involve Ethan Hawke or Russell Crowe, it becomes its own movie.

‘The Weight’ Isn’t a Perfect Homage to 1970s Tough-Guy Movies. But It’s Close

Things were tough all over in 1933. For Samuel Murphy (Ethan Hawke), life is especially hard. A widower with a young daughter (Avy Berry), he’s trying to find steady work. Murphy’s a whiz with cars, both fixing them and driving them fast, yet those skills only mean so much when the Great Depression is threatening to turn Eugene, Oregon, into a ghost town. They’ve just been evicted from their apartment, coming home from church to find all of their worldly possessions on the stairs. Their spirits are close to broken, but at the least they have each other.

Ethan Hawke comfortably shoulders The Weight of a throwback '70s-style adventure

Deep in the wilderness of the Pacific Northwest in 1933, a group of men trek through dangerous terrain while carrying hefty packs of stolen gold, forced into transporting it for the profit of others. Beyond the environment, they face danger both from the gun-wielding thugs assigned to monitor them, ensuring they won’t abscond with the fortune, and from the equally lethal assailants lurking behind the trees, who know what they hold and aim to take it for themselves. A nerve-shredding tale of adventure and suspense, The Weight harkens back to old-fashioned fare like John Huston’s The Treasure Of The Sierra Madre and William Friedkin’s Sorcerer: tales of hardened men who have fallen on troubled times, backed into a corner where the only way out is through seemingly insurmountable odds.
