Analyzing what the best-case-scenario is for Norman Powell's Bulls tenure

The Chicago Bulls made one of the more surprising signings of the summer when they landed Norman Powell on a two-year, $44,075,000 contract. Chicago's interest in Powell was clearly understandable from a pure talent perspective, but he doesn't quite fit the timeline of their 24-and-under core as a 33-year-old veteran.

That's beckoned a pivotal question: How long will Powell's tenure in Chicago actually last? More importantly: What exactly is an ideal run for him with the Bulls?

On one hand, Powell is a sharpshooting All-Star whose volume as a scorer and ability to space the floor should simplify the game for his younger teammates. On the other, if he plays up to his full ability, there should be a robust market for his team-friendly contract at the trade deadline.

Preseason question: Powell followed the money to Chicago instead of sticking around in Miami for the Giannis revolution. The question now is how long he’ll grit it out with a rebuilding Bulls club. Chicago needs Powell’s shooting, and with a less tanktastic lottery odds system in place this season, there’s nothing to stop the Bulls from being the best that they can be—besides, y’know, defense, experience, and most other on-court factors. But Powell’s contract (two years with a team option in the second year) is built to flip. Until then, there really seem to be only two paths for the 12th-year guard: dial in a defined role to show contenders what they could have or let ’er rip and try to break the scoring barrier.

Norman Powell News: Tallies 15 points in Chicago debut

Powell ended with 15 points (3-9 FG, 2-6 3Pt, 7-11 FT), five rebounds, one assist and one steal over 22 minutes during Wednesday's 135-92 loss to Toronto.

Powell didn't have the most efficient night from the field, but he finished tied for the third-most points on the Bulls thanks to his seven made free throws, though he connected on only 63.6 percent of his attempts from the charity stripe. Powell averaged over 21.0 points per game in each of the last two seasons, but his offensive output may be limited while playing alongside the young core of Josh Giddey, Matas Buzelis and rookie fourth-overall pick Caleb Wilson.
