Live coverage: SpaceX to launch Starfall reentry capsule, 31 customer payloads on Bandwagon-5 rideshare mission

Update Oct. 19, 4:07 a.m. EDT (0807 UTC): SpaceX scrubbed the launch attempt on Monday, Oct. 19, due to poor weather in the booster recovery zone. Now targeting Tuesday, Oct. 20.

SpaceX will fly its uncrewed reentry Starfall capsule aboard the Bandwagon-5 rideshare mission from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, scheduled for launch before dawn on Tuesday.

The 32 payloads onboard the Falcon 9 rocket will take flight from Space Launch Complex 40 during an hour-long window that opens at 6:30 a.m. EDT (1030 UTC). The rocket will fly on a southeasterly trajectory upon leaving the pad.

Spaceflight Now will have live coverage beginning about an hour prior to liftoff.

SpaceX Flies 2,100kg Starfall Capsule on Bandwagon-5 [2026]

SpaceX is set to launch its Bandwagon-5 mission on Monday, October 19, 2026, sending a dedicated rideshare payload stack of more than 30 satellites to low Earth orbit aboard a Falcon 9 rocket. The launch window opens at 10:30 UTC and runs through 11:30 UTC, lifting off from Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral, Florida, according to SpaceX’s own launch page and multiple independent launch trackers including Next Spaceflight and Spaceflight Now. Among the more than 30 payloads riding on this flight, third-party launch listings flag a notable rider: a second demonstration of a small SpaceX-linked capsule program known as Project Starfall.

The mission matters for two separate reasons. First, Bandwagon-5 keeps SpaceX’s mid-inclination rideshare line running on a tight cadence, a business line that has quietly become one of the cheapest ways for small satellite operators to reach orbit. Second, the Starfall hardware riding along with the smallsat stack has drawn outsized attention online, even though SpaceX’s own mission page does not use the term “return capsule” and does not confirm that this is a repeat flight of previously flown hardware. Here is what is actually confirmed, what is still unverified, and why both the launch and the capsule are worth watching.

SpaceX to launch Starfall return capsule for the second time on Bandwagon-5 mission tomorrow

SpaceX is preparing to launch another batch of essential payloads on October 19. The Falcon 9 rocket is scheduled to lift off from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida for the Bandwagon-5 rideshare mission when the one-hour window opens at 6:30 am ET. SpaceX says a backup opportunity is available with the same window the next day. The rocket will be carrying a total of 32 payloads including cubesats, microsats, and technology demonstrations. Moreover, the mission will mark the Falcon 9 booster’s 19th flight. It has previously launched NASA’s Crew-9, RRT-1, Firefly Blue Ghost Mission 1, Fram2, SXM-10, MTG-S1, EchoStar XXV, SXM-11, and now 10 Starlink missions. After separating from the first stage, the booster will land on the A Shortfall of Gravitas droneship which will be stationed in the Atlantic Ocean.
