Italy protests: Giorgia Meloni condemns ‘hooligans ravaging Milan’
Giorgia Meloni, the Italian prime minister, has called a security meeting for Monday after “hooligans” clashed with police for a second consecutive day, turning Milan’s central piazza into what local media called a battleground.
“Once again, law enforcement officers — both men and women — have had to confront violence from criminals who, sometimes as part of organised groups, exploit demonstrations to provoke conflict and sow chaos,” Meloni wrote on social media on Sunday.
“I extend my full solidarity and sincere thanks, because they were there to protect the safety of citizens, workers, business owners and all those who have the right to live in their city without fear and without seeing it ravaged by gangs of hooligans.”
