Former WBZ anchor Kate Merrill sues station, network for $4 million, alleging racial and gender discrimination

Kate Merrill, a former longtime anchor at WBZ-TV, has filed a $4 million lawsuit against the station, CBS and its parent company, Paramount, and four former co-workers alleging racial and gender discrimination, according to a complaint filed Tuesday in federal court.

Merrill, who abruptly left WBZ in 2024, claims the Boston station and two companies took a “career-ending action” against her to “advance a DEI agenda,” short for diversity, equity and inclusion, the complaint states.

Merrill, who joined WBZ in 2004 as a reporter and rose to co-anchor of the Boston station’s morning show, said she suffered discrimination on the basis of her race and gender. Paramount opened an investigation into her conduct after two Black coworkers separately raised complaints about her, according to the lawsuit.

A WBZ morning anchor who abruptly left the station last year is suing for $4 million, claiming she was discriminated against on the basis of her gender and her race, according to new court filings. 

Kate Merrill, a white woman, began as a reporter for WBZ in 2004 and co-anchored the morning and noon news from 2017 until her departure in June of 2024, according to the lawsuit, which was first reported on by Universal Hub. The departure of her co-anchor, Liam Martin, months prior also made headlines.

Merrill filed a federal lawsuit in Boston Tuesday against the station, parent companies CBS and Paramount, two former colleagues, her superior Justin Draper, and Michael Roderick, who, according to the suit, investigated complaints of discrimination at WBZ.
