Living outside the community they want to represent can be a handicap for political candidates, but it’s not likely to be a problem for Los Angeles mayoral hopeful Spencer Pratt, who until recently was living in Carpinteria in Santa Barbara County, analysts say.
That’s because Pratt’s home burned in the January 2025 Palisades fire, making him a sympathetic figure among many voters — especially those living in his Westside base, they say.
“I don’t think this is going to be electorally consequential,” said Zev Yaroslavsky, a former Los Angeles County supervisor and L.A. City Council member who now runs the UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs. “He’s a victim of the Palisades fire that doesn’t have a home to live in because it burned down.”
Spencer Pratt's LA mayoral candidate eligibility questioned after move to Santa Barbara County following Palisades Fire
LOS ANGELES (KABC) — Los Angeles mayoral candidate Spencer Pratt is living in Santa Barbara County after losing his home in the Palisades Fire, leading some critics to question his eligibility to run for office in L.A.
The City Clerk's Office says candidates were required to be registered to vote in L.A. and be residents of the city by Jan. 3, according to a report from the L.A. Times.
Pratt says he has been living at his father's rental home in Carpinteria, about 12 miles south of Santa Barbara, but his burned-out lot is still his legal residence.
According to the L.A. Times report, Pratt and his wife, reality star and singer Heidi Pratt, both listed a Carpinteria address linked to Pratt's parents on their voter registrations. Pratt listed it as his mailing address, while Heidi listed it as her mailing address and residence.

LA mayoral candidate Spencer Pratt defends residency following reports of living outside city limits
Controversy is swirling around LA mayoral candidate Spencer Pratt after the LA Times reported he lives in Santa Barbara County.
Los Angeles mayoral candidate Spencer Pratt is looking to set the record straight after a report claimed he does not reside in the city.
A report from the Los Angeles Times revealed Pratt lives in Santa Barbara County, adding that he stays with his family in a rental home in Carpinteria. His father owns the home, and the family has been living there since their Pacific Palisades home was destroyed in the January 2025 wildfires.
Pratt alleged the reporting "crossed a line," accusing a Times journalist of contacting his wife, sister, mother, and a restaurant he frequents to gather details about his family. He claimed the investigation began after he surpassed Los Angeles City Councilmember Nithya Raman in a recent poll.
