Chimpanzee returned to exhibit after escape at Indianapolis Zoo

INDIANAPOLIS — A chimpanzee has been returned to the enclosure at the Indianapolis Zoo after escaping Friday morning.
Jake Oakman, senior vice president of external relations at the Indianapolis Zoo, said a female chimpanzee was seen outside of the International Chimpanzee Complex around 10 a.m. Nov. 14.
Oakman said the zoo was immediately placed on lockdown, and guests were escorted to secure locations.
According to Oakman, the chimpanzee was sedated and returned to the exhibit.
"The zoo security, animal care and veterinary teams train for these scenarios and responded in a textbook and professional manner," Oakman said.
Escaped chimp back in enclosure; no injuries reported, Indianapolis Zoo confirms
A chimpanzee that escaped its enclosure has been recaptured, the Indianapolis Zoo has confirmed.
Indianapolis fire crews were called to the zoo in response to an "animal bite" about 10:10 a.m. Nov. 14, 2025. Just before 11 a.m. the call was changed to an "investigation" at the zoo, located at 1200 W. Washington St.
The Indianapolis Zoo confirmed in an email sent out minutes after noon that a female chimpanzee had been sedated and returned to her exhibit.
"Zoo guests were safe at all times. There were no injuries to guests, Zoo staff or the animal," the email from the Indianapolis Zoo reads. "The Zoo’s security, animal care and veterinary teams train for these scenarios and responded in a textbook and professional manner. The Zoo has reopened as normal."
