Detroit Red Wings name Shawn Horcoff interim GM while search continues

The Detroit Red Wings have named Shawn Horcoff interim general manager while the search continues for a permanent replacement for Steve Yzerman.

The team announced the news on Tuesday, Sept. 15, two days before training camp is schedule to start at Little Caesars Arena. Horcoff, 47, has spent six seasons as the team's director of player development and three seasons as assistant director of player personnel. He has been handling daily general manager duties since Steve Yzerman vacated the position in mid-July.

“As our process continues to find the best possible leader for Red Wings hockey operations, I’m appreciative of Shawn for stepping up to serve in this capacity,” Red Wings governor and CEO Chris Ilitch said in a statement. “His knowledge of our organization and range of experience allows us to operate with a clear decision-maker in place for the season ahead, while maintaining our commitment to carry out a thorough, methodical search process on our own timeline. Shawn has my complete support, and the authority to make decisions in the best interests of our organization."

Red Wings name Shawn Horcoff interim general manager

DETROIT — The Red Wings finally have a general manager after a lengthy two-month search.

And it only took looking down the hallway to find the replacement.

Two days before the start of training camp, the Wings announced Sept. 15 that Shawn Horcoff will be the team's interim general manager.

Horcoff, who'll turn 48 Thursday, joined the Wings' organization in 2016 as assistant director of player development and has steadily seen his role increase.

An assistant to former general manager Steve Yzerman for the last three seasons, Horcoff was also GM of the minor-league affiliate Grand Rapids Griffins and is familiar with the Wings' personnel.

While the search for the Detroit Red Wings’ next permanent head of hockey operations continues, the Red Wings have named Shawn Horcoff interim general manager, the team announced Tuesday.

Horcoff, who played 15 years in the NHL with Edmonton, Dallas and Anaheim, has been in the Red Wings’ front office since 2016, joining the organization as director of player development before being promoted to assistant general manager in 2022. Horcoff also served as GM of the team’s AHL affiliate Grand Rapids Griffins during that time.

“As our process continues to find the best possible leader for Red Wings hockey operations, I’m appreciative of Shawn for stepping up to serve in this capacity,” Red Wings governor and CEO Chris Ilitch said in a news release. “His knowledge of our organization and range of experience allows us to operate with a clear decision-maker in place for the season ahead, while maintaining our commitment to carry out a thorough, methodical search process on our own timeline. Shawn has my complete support, and the authority to make decisions in the best interests of our organization.
